SILENT SKY

I went into Silent Sky knowing very little and came out with a newfound appreciation for the glossed over women of history. This show was unique for me in a couple of ways; it was a correspondence between astronomy and theatre, and it highlighted women buried under male academia. Our director always reminded us that this play was a celebration of Henrietta Leavitt. There were some emotionally poignant scenes, but we never strayed too far into being "precious" or "tragic." I did my best to honor that and to support my cast mates. I didn't want the love story to be the center of attention. I saw Peter's role as a presence off of which Henrietta could reflect her own passion and ambition.

Before rehearsals began, the director asked each of the actors to write up a character analysis and backstory. In doing so, we would fully explore the text, motivations, objectives, and history. The character analysis aided me in piecing together the flow of events and breaking down each moment into specific acting beats. The backstory fleshed out Peter's character and gave me material to work with when identifying his motivations.
